Fusion und Crossover sind mittlerweile so abgenutzte Begriffe, dass man sie für Younee (sprich: Juni) und ihr wunderschönes Album »Jugendstil« am liebsten gar nicht verwenden würde. Und doch ist das, was sie da spielt, weder reine Klassik noch echter Jazz, sondern etwas sehr Anmutiges und Stilsicheres irgendwo dazwischen. Der Hörer versteht sofort: Younee spielt Musik in einer Welt ohne Genregrenzen. Terms such as “fusion” and “crossover” have become so familiar that one might almost prefer not to use them when describing Younee and her remarkable album “Jugendstil”. And yet what Younee creates is neither purely Classical Music nor conventional Jazz, but something graceful, distinctive and stylistically assured that exists somewhere in between.

The listener quickly understands that Younee makes music in a world without genre boundaries. Her unique approach also makes her an inspiring figure for anyone looking to introduce more people — particularly children and young people — to Classical Music.

How does a Korean pianist bring classical works to life in a modern, pulsating language somewhere between Pop, Rock and Jazz? The journey towards “Jugendstil” began many years before the album itself was recorded.

Even as a child, Younee would play melodies and draw piano keyboards on paper before she had a piano of her own. When she finally received her first instrument, she was the happiest girl in South Korea.

For Younee, the Classical pieces she encountered throughout her musical education have always possessed a life of their own in the present. She firmly believes that composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Bach might have written in a similarly distinctive — but perhaps much groovier — way had they been creating music today.

With “Jugendstil”, Younee set out to make Classical Music exciting and accessible beyond the established world of Classical Music.
