Ein Album ohne Grenzen: »My Piano« von Younee

In ihrer Heimat Südkorea ist Younee bereits ein Star und auch hierzulande erfreut sich die Pianistin steigender Beliebtheit. Nach ihrem erfolgreichen Debüt präsentiert sie 2016 ihr zweites Album »My Piano«.

Mit ihrem Erstling »Jugendstil« hatte Younee in Deutschland erstmals auf sich aufmerksam gemacht und bewiesen, dass sie zu den innovativsten Künstlern ihres Genres gehört. Mit ihren ganz eigenen Interpretationen von Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin und weiteren großen Komponisten zeigte sie, dass ihre Musik vor Genregrenzen keinen Halt macht. Mal ging es in Richtung Rock, mal in Richtung Jazz oder Pop – festlegen tut sie sich niemals.

Mit ihrem neuen Album zeigt Younee nun, dass sie nicht nur eine überaus begabte Pianistin, sondern zudem eine herausragende Komponistin ist. Alle elf Instrumentalstücke auf »My Piano« komponierte, arrangierte und produzierte sie in ihrem Heimstudio in Eigenregie. Sie bezeichnete das Album daher bereits mit den Worten »That’s me!«.

Und diese Aussage trifft auf »My Piano« ganz genau zu. Ihre Songs gehen dabei nicht selten aus Improvisationen hervor, weshalb der Aufnahmeknopf in ihrem Studio auch immer auf »on« stehe. Aufgenommen hat Younee ihre Lieder mit einer speziellen Auswahl und Aufstellung von Mikrofonen. So entstand der Albumsound, der den Hörer in die Position der Künstlerin am Piano versetzt.

Für »My Piano« experimentierte sie, wie schon beim Vorgänger, mit verschiedenen Musikstilen. Jazz, Rock, Pop, Blues und klassische Musik – Younee ist eine facettenreiche Pianistin. Und nicht nur das, sie kann auch noch singen, wie sie auf der Bonus-CD deutlich macht – mit dem selbst geschriebenen Song »Hello Hello« und dem Lied »Auf Flügeln des Gesanges« aus Heinrich Heines »Buch der Lieder«, das Felix Mendelssohn vertonte. Mit »Wednesday Night« wartet auf CD 2 zudem ein spontan improvisiertes Stück, das Younee im November 2015 in den Ansbacher Kammerspielen darbot.

Mit ihrem neuen Album »My Piano« stellt Younee ihre herausragenden Qualitäten als Komponistin unter Beweis und zeigt, dass gute Musik nicht auf ein Genre festgelegt ist. Stattdessen verbindet sie verschiedene Genres, technische Finesse und große Emotionen.

An Album Without Borders: “My Piano”

Younee is already a star in her native South Korea, and her reputation as a pianist has continued to grow in Germany. Following the success of her debut album, “Jugendstil”, Younee presented her second album, “My Piano”, in 2016.

Younee first attracted attention in Germany with “Jugendstil”, establishing herself as one of the most innovative artists working across Classical Music and contemporary genres.

Through her distinctive interpretations of works by Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin and other great composers, Younee demonstrated that her music knows no genre boundaries. At times it moves towards Rock, at others towards Jazz or Pop — but she never allows herself to be confined to a single style.

With “My Piano”, Younee reveals another dimension of her artistry. Not only is she an exceptionally talented pianist, she is also an accomplished composer, arranger and producer. She composed, arranged and produced all eleven instrumental tracks on the album herself in her home studio. It is an intensely personal body of work, which is why Younee described it simply as: “That’s me!”

The statement could hardly be more fitting. Much of the music on “My Piano” grows out of improvisation. Ideas emerge spontaneously at the piano, developing in the moment and becoming compositions through the act of playing itself. In Younee’s studio, the recording button is therefore always ready to capture those unexpected moments.

For the recordings, Younee experimented with a carefully chosen selection and placement of microphones. This created the distinctive sound of the album and places the listener remarkably close to the piano — almost as though experiencing the music from the artist’s own position at the instrument.

As with its predecessor, “My Piano” moves freely between musical styles. Jazz, Rock, Pop, Blues and Classical Music all find their place here. Younee is a remarkably versatile pianist, but her musicianship extends far beyond the piano.

The album also reveals another side of Younee’s artistry: she is a singer as well as a pianist and composer. The bonus CD features “Hello Hello”, an original song written by Younee, as well as “On Wings of Song”, based on Heinrich Heine’s poem from “Book of Songs”, set to music by Felix Mendelssohn.

The second CD also includes “Wednesday Night”, a spontaneously improvised piece that Younee performed at the Ansbacher Kammerspiele in November 2015.

With “My Piano”, Younee demonstrates her qualities as a composer and shows that great music does not need to be confined to a single genre. Instead, she brings together different musical worlds, technical finesse and genuine emotion.

“My Piano” is ultimately an album that sounds exactly like its title suggests: personal, immediate and unmistakably Younee.

경계 없는 음악의 세계: 「My Piano」 — Younee

Younee는 이미 한국에서 스타 피아니스트로 자리 잡았으며, 독일에서도 피아니스트로서의 명성을 꾸준히 넓혀가고 있다. 데뷔 앨범 「Jugendstil」의 성공에 이어, Younee는 2016년 두 번째 앨범 「My Piano」를 선보였다.

Younee는 독일에서 데뷔 앨범 「Jugendstil」을 통해 처음 주목받기 시작했고, 클래식 음악과 현대적인 장르의 경계를 자유롭게 넘나드는 가장 독창적인 음악가 중 한 사람으로 자신의 존재감을 확고히 했다.

Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin을 비롯한 위대한 작곡가들의 작품을 자신만의 방식으로 해석하면서 Younee는 자신의 음악에 장르의 경계가 없음을 보여주었다. 때로는 록으로 향하고, 때로는 재즈와 팝으로 흐르지만, 어느 하나의 스타일에도 자신을 가두지 않는다.

「My Piano」에서는 Younee의 또 다른 면모가 드러난다. 뛰어난 피아니스트인 동시에 작곡가, 편곡가, 프로듀서로서의 역량까지 온전히 보여주는 것이다. 앨범에 수록된 11곡의 연주곡을 모두 직접 작곡하고, 편곡하고, 자신의 홈 스튜디오에서 직접 프로듀싱했다. 그래서 Younee는 이 앨범을 한마디로 이렇게 표현했다.

“That’s me!”

이보다 더 잘 어울리는 표현도 없을 것이다.

「My Piano」에 담긴 음악의 상당 부분은 즉흥연주에서 시작된다. 피아노 앞에서 순간적으로 떠오른 아이디어가 연주하는 과정 속에서 자연스럽게 발전하고, 그렇게 하나의 작품으로 완성된다. 그래서 Younee의 스튜디오에서는 뜻밖의 순간을 놓치지 않기 위해 언제나 녹음 버튼을 누를 준비가 되어 있다.

앨범의 녹음 과정에서 Younee는 마이크의 종류와 위치를 세심하게 선택하고 실험했다. 그 결과 「My Piano」만의 독특한 사운드가 만들어졌고, 청자는 마치 피아노 앞에 앉아 있는 Younee의 자리에서 음악을 듣는 듯한 매우 가까운 거리감을 경험하게 된다.

전작과 마찬가지로 「My Piano」 역시 하나의 장르에 머물지 않는다. Jazz, Rock, Pop, Blues, Classical Music이 자유롭게 공존한다. Younee는 폭넓은 음악적 스펙트럼을 가진 피아니스트이며, 그녀의 음악적 역량은 피아노에만 머물지 않는다.

이 앨범에서는 Younee가 피아니스트이자 작곡가일 뿐 아니라 가수이기도 하다는 사실도 만날 수 있다. 보너스 CD에는 Younee가 직접 작사·작곡한 오리지널 곡 “Hello Hello”와 Heinrich Heine의 시 「Book of Songs」에 수록된 시에 Felix Mendelssohn이 곡을 붙인 “On Wings of Song”이 담겨 있다.

두 번째 CD에는 2015년 11월 Ansbacher Kammerspiele에서 Younee가 즉흥적으로 연주했던 “Wednesday Night”도 수록되어 있다.

「My Piano」는 Younee가 작곡가로서 지닌 역량을 다시 한번 보여주며, 좋은 음악에는 장르의 경계가 필요하지 않다는 사실을 증명한다. 서로 다른 음악적 세계와 뛰어난 테크닉, 그리고 진솔한 감정을 하나의 음악 안에서 자연스럽게 결합한다.

결국 「My Piano」는 제목 그대로 Younee 그 자체를 들려주는 앨범이다. 지극히 개인적이고, 즉각적이며, 무엇보다 누구도 흉내 낼 수 없는 Younee의 음악이다.
